Fengshan - Bedok 85; so much good food packed in a hawker centre, crowded & long queues everywhere. Notable items here - Ngor Hiang, Satay Bee Hoon, BBQ Wings, Satay, BBQ Stingray & of course Bak Chor Mee
There are 3 Rou Cuo Mian stalls in Bedok85, Xing Ji, Ah Poh & Seng Hiang. If you are thinking of the dry version, you might be disappointed. What clearly is a favourite here is the soup version.
The stall's version of Singapore favourite dish of Bak Chor Mee, is similar to one another, a meaty pork broth soup with meatballs and minced meat in it & springy noodles.
Xing Ji Rou Cuo Mian was started by Mr Sim 5 decades ago. He peddled a pushcart around Simpang Bedok, and was moved to the current day stall at Fengshan Centre 40 years ago.
Currently run by his grandchildren, the queue starts at about 5.30pm; they only sell soup version & you only get to choose noodle type, and size of the serving! With many accolades and awards, this stall is widely known to be the original and only one worth eating.
Seng Hiang Ruo Cuo Mian, the stall which is right next door to Xing Ji, started out selling other stuff but sold Ruo Cuo Mian since the nineties and is now bustling with activity too. Long queues form around 6plus and it continues throughout the night too. Unique point : they sell a DRY version too! This stall also gets a number of awards and mentions!
Ah Poh Rou Cuo Mian is the third and unheard one at Bedok 85 as their stall is not out front.
A small bit of trivia – Ah Poh is related to one of the other heavy weights – Xing Ji Rou Cuo Mian as the owners are sisters who probably share similar recipes. Long queues form for this stall too, they open much later, around 6pm, and queues forms immediately!
WE TRIED IT!
Makan Kaki team tried all 3 stalls!
We love how the noodles stay QQ and the flavourful soup broth, you can have this everyday!
Notable points
1. All 3 are rather close in taste, look & presentation.
2. Queues are similar in length, but Ah Poh can be slightly longer queue time.
3. Xing Ji's noodles are the best in terms of QQ texture!
4. Ah Poh Soup base is most flavourful and consistent, every time we are back, it tastes the same.
5. Seng Hiang have DRY version, which means sambal chilli and we all have friends who need that.
MK Rating :
Xing Ji : 9/10
Seng Hiang : 8.5/10
Ah Poh : 9.5/10
( please note that Makan Kaki pays for our own food and tries food anonymously, we do not have any ongoing partnership tie-ups with any stall. )
